ICO is the format for Windows icons and website favicons. It holds several small sizes, such as 16, 32, 48 and 256 px, in one file. It is needed only for making a favicon. Nobody keeps photographs in it. AVIF applies the AV1 video codec to still images. It is smaller than WebP and opens in current browsers.
For images going onto a website, AVIF is smaller at the same quality, so the page loads faster.
The file is opened and converted inside this browser and never sent to a server. Because the source is a lossless format, the result is written as lossless AVIF. Not one pixel changes. Camera metadata (EXIF) is not carried over, so no location data remains in the result. You can add several files at once.
