Why this size
3What happens, and why
The Instagram Help Center says a photo between 320 and 1080 pixels wide keeps its original resolution when its aspect ratio is between 1.91:1 and 3:4. 3:4 is the portrait end of that range: at a width of 1080 px it is 1440 px tall, which is the height limit the Help Center gives. Anything taller is cropped to a supported ratio.
Choose 3:4 when you want a portrait photo to show as large as possible. Phone cameras shoot 4:3 in landscape and 3:4 in portrait, so a photo taken upright is already this ratio and loses nothing at all if you set the box to its maximum here.
This page crops at 3:4 with the size box set to 1080 × 1440. The JPEG is not re-encoded, so the crop is in the same compression state as the original, and Instagram sizes it down to 1080 px wide on upload.

3How does 3:4 differ from 4:5
It is 90 px taller: at 1080 px wide, 3:4 is 1440 px and 4:5 is 1350 px. On a phone screen 3:4 shows slightly larger.
What if I post a 9:16 portrait to the feed
The tallest ratio the feed keeps is 3:4. 9:16 is outside the range, so Instagram crops the top and bottom to fit 3:4. To decide what gets cut, crop to 3:4 yourself first.
Is a phone photo taken upright already 3:4
Usually. The default camera app saves at the sensor’s 4:3 ratio, which is 3:4 held upright. Set the box to its maximum here and the crop equals the original.
