Why this size
3What happens, and why
LinkedIn Help lists, among the things to check when a profile photo will not upload, that the file must be no larger than 8 MB, that its pixel size must be between 400 (w) × 400 (h) and 7680 (w) × 4320 (h), and that the file type must be PNG or JPG. GIFs are not supported. No ratio is stated, but the profile photo is displayed in a circle, so a square crop is what puts the face in the middle.
A circle hides the four corners of the square. Keep the face in the centre of the box with a little room above the head and below the shoulders and it lands inside the circle. Auto mode finds the face and sets that room. The plainer the background, the better the face reads at icon size.
This page crops at 1:1. With a 400 × 400 minimum, the largest square the original allows is nearly always within the limits. The JPEG is not re-encoded, so a file close to 8 MB may still be large after cropping; that is where a resize step is needed.

3What if my photo is not square
LinkedIn shows a crop screen after upload and asks you to pick a square region. Cropping to 1:1 here first means you decide what goes, not the upload dialog.
What about a photo larger than 7680 × 4320
Going by LinkedIn Help, it will not upload. Type a smaller size into the size box here, or resize the photo first.
What if the file is over 8 MB
It will not upload. A lossless crop only removes the bytes of the area cut away, so a large original may still exceed 8 MB as a square. That needs a resize, which re-saves the file.
