Why this size
3What happens, and why
Square is the ratio Instagram started with. The feed now accepts anything from 1.91:1 landscape to 3:4 portrait, and 1:1 sits in the middle of that range, so a square is never re-cropped in the feed or the profile grid. The Help Center keeps a photo at its original resolution up to a width of 1080 pixels, which makes a square 1080 × 1080 px.
A square suits a photo whose subject is in the centre: a half-length portrait, a plate of food, a single product. Cropping a portrait photo to a square removes the top and bottom, so watch how much room is left above the head and below the chin as you move the box. Auto mode finds the face and sets that room for you.
This page crops at 1:1 with the size box set to 1080 × 1080. The JPEG is not re-encoded, so a 4000 px original keeps that resolution in the crop, and Instagram sizes it down to 1080 px on upload.

3Does a square post show as a square in the grid
Instagram has changed how the grid displays over time, and the Help Center’s resolution page does not state a grid size. The post itself is stored at 1:1 and opens that way.
What if the photo is smaller than 1080 × 1080
The Help Center says a lower-resolution photo is enlarged to a width of 320 pixels. Stay above 320 px, and use an original of 1080 px or more where you can.
Why choose 1:1 over 4:5 or 3:4
When the subject is centred and needs no room above or below, and when you post several photos together: every photo in a carousel takes the ratio of the first one.
