BMP is the uncompressed Windows bitmap. The pixels are stored as they are, so files are large, and there is no transparency. Windows Paint, older programs and some devices export it. PNG is a lossless format. Every pixel is kept exactly and it stores transparency. Photographs come out far larger than JPG.
An uncompressed BMP is several to dozens of times the size of the same picture as PNG. Converting shrinks it and it opens anywhere.
