3What happens, and why
SVG is a vector format. It stores shapes, not pixels, so it scales to any size without breaking up. It is not a format for photographs. Logos, icons and exports from Illustrator or Figma come in it. AVIF applies the AV1 video codec to still images. It is smaller than WebP and opens in current browsers.
A vector SVG has to be drawn into AVIF wherever a pixel image is required: a profile picture, a document, an older program. For images going onto a website, AVIF is smaller at the same quality, so the page loads faster.
The file is opened and converted inside this browser and never sent to a server. Because the source is a lossless format, the result is written as lossless AVIF. Not one pixel changes. Camera metadata (EXIF) is not carried over, so no location data remains in the result. You can add several files at once.
