SVG is a vector format. It stores shapes, not pixels, so it scales to any size without breaking up. It is not a format for photographs. Logos, icons and exports from Illustrator or Figma come in it. PNG is a lossless format. Every pixel is kept exactly and it stores transparency. Photographs come out far larger than JPG.
A vector SVG has to be drawn into PNG wherever a pixel image is required: a profile picture, a document, an older program.
The file is opened and converted inside this browser and never sent to a server. PNG is a lossless format, so not one pixel changes. Camera metadata (EXIF) is not carried over, so no location data remains in the result. You can add several files at once.
