What changes
3What happens, and why
SVG is a vector format. It stores shapes, not pixels, so it scales to any size without breaking up. It is not a format for photographs. Logos, icons and exports from Illustrator or Figma come in it. BMP is the uncompressed Windows bitmap. The pixels are stored as they are, so files are large, and there is no transparency.
A vector SVG has to be drawn into BMP wherever a pixel image is required: a profile picture, a document, an older program. BMP is large because it is uncompressed, but Paint and older devices and programs open it without fail.
The file is opened and converted inside this browser and never sent to a server. BMP is a lossless format, so not one pixel changes. Camera metadata (EXIF) is not carried over, so no location data remains in the result. You can add several files at once.
FAQ
3Does the quality get worse
BMP is lossless, so the pixels are unchanged. Open the result next to the source and they match.
What happens to a transparent background
BMP cannot store transparency. Transparent areas are filled with white. If you need a transparent background, choose PNG or WebP.
Where does my file go
Nowhere. The conversion finishes inside this browser, and camera metadata (EXIF, location) is not carried into the result.
